Visiting the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Care

Svetlana Medvedeva participated in a ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of the opening of the hospital, which was founded by Count Nikolai Sheremetyev in 1810.

In the 1920s, the Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Care was established here.

In her speech at the ceremony, Ms Medvedeva noted that this anniversary is a celebration not only for the Institute’s personnel, but for thousands of grateful patients as well. She pointed out that this hospital was one of the first in Russia to provide social and medical assistance to the poor, including orphans and homeless, and that its history is filled with examples of compassion and selflessness.

The First Lady visited the Institute’s church, leaving an icon as a gift.

The Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Care is a major research centre providing emergency medical care, intensive care, emergency cardiac care, emergency surgery, burning injury and acute poisoning treatment services. The Institute has over 40 research departments involved in developing new methods for diagnosing and treating patients suffering from the most severe and complicated acute surgical disorders and injuries. Each year the Institute provides high-quality treatment to some 52,000 patients from various regions of Russia and performs over 20,000 surgeries.
