Svetlana Medvedeva was born on March 15, 1965 in Leningrad.
She graduated from the Leningrad Financial and Economics Institute in 1987 with a degree in business analysis.
She started working in her specialist area while still at the institute.
Svetlana married Dmitry Medvedev in 1993, and in 1995, following the birth of their son, she stopped pursuing her career to devote herself completely to his upbringing.
Ms Medvedeva is an active supporter of social and cultural programmes implemented in Russia and some European cities.
In 2006 she initiated the Russian Arts Festival in Bari, Italy, which now takes place as an annual event.
Ms Medvedeva chairs the Board of Trustees of the targeted comprehensive programme «Spiritual and Moral Culture for the Youth of Russia», launched with the blessing of Patriarch Alexii II.
In 2008, she headed the public initiative to celebrate Day of the Family in Russia.
In December 2008, she established the Socio-Cultural Initiatives Foundation, which she heads.
Ms Medvedeva is fluent in French.
The Medvedevs have one son, Ilya (born in 1995).
